While there is angst in some communities across the country accusing law enforcement of police brutality, the Nampa Police Department says it has been addressing the issue for years.

Nampa PD says they put a huge emphasis on training. Police say the training has had an impact on the number of critical incidents.

"The more you spend on training, the more it costs, we have seen an increase in our training budget where can train on a regular basis. Untrained people make poorer decisions, and we found that just here in Nampa there is a direct correlation the more we train, the less the use of force incident occurred," Nampa PD Captain, Brad Daniels, said.

Nampa Police has trained officers on force policy, crisis intervention, and de-escalation techniques.

Daniels says they’ve been training like this for years, before the recent high profile incidents.

According to Nampa police data, their budget for police training has increased from $247,913 in 2019 to $318,500 in 2020.

"Cops are humans. Sometimes humans make poor decisions, we are human, Sometimes some cops just shouldn’t have been hired. but it’s rare, very rare, " Daniels said.
