It was an hour of terror for University of Cincinnati students early Monday morning as a mass shooting unfolded near campus.
Three men are dead and two more are in stable condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center after the mass shooting in Corryville, Ohio near East University and Highland avenues shortly before 3 a.m., Cincinnati Lieutenant Jonathan Cunningham told Newsweek.
Five people were shot in total. Police found four male victims when they arrived at the scene. One was pronounced dead on the scene and another was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where they were pronounced dead.
Another victim reportedly self-transported to another nearby hospital, Cunningham said.
The victims' identities have not been released by police as of Monday afternoon.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with ALL who have been impacted by this tragic incident, this is simply heartbreaking," Cunningham said.
Police ask anyone who witnessed this shooting or has any information to call Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040.
"There were multiple firearms recovered at the crime scene and two subjects (one of which was also shot) are being detained at this time," Cincinnati police Capt. Mark Burns told The Associated Press in an email.
Someone on the scene allegedly ran into a house with a weapon and a brief standoff occurred. The person was taken into custody but Burns said it's unclear if the individual was the shooter.
The University of Cincinnati sent out a series of alerts on X, formerly known as Twitter, telling students that police were responding in the area at 2:54 a.m. Another alert was sent at 3:12 a.m. stating that a shooting occurred near the campus.
UC Public Safety tweeted an "all clear" message at 3:51 a.m. Monday morning, noting that the suspect is in police custody and police will remain in the area.
