Janet Reno was a Democrat and the 78th Attorney General of the United States. She served under President Bill Clinton and was the first woman to hold that office. Reno was born on July 21, 1938, in Miami, Florida. Her father, Henry Reno, was a police reporter for the Miami Herald, and her mother, Jane Wood, an investigative reporter for the Miami News. She had three siblings, Robert, Mark, and Maggy. Reno attended Coral Gables Senior High School in Coral Gables, Florida. She studied chemistry at Cornell University and completed a law degree at Harvard Law School.

CAREER
Reno worked as a lawyer in private practice after graduating from Harvard Law in 1963. She was appointed as director of the Judiciary Committee of the Florida House of Representatives in 1971. Reno was named state attorney for Dade County in 1978. She held that office until 1993 after being re-elected 4 more times. During her tenure, she established the Miami Drug Court and made changes to the juvenile justice system.

President Bill Clinton nominated Janet Reno in 1993 to serve as the U.S. attorney general. She was approved by the Senate and she held that office until January 2001. She was one of the longest-reigning Attorney General, second only to William Wirt. Reno was in charge of the final raid on the Branch Davidian cult in 1993. She was also involved in the capture and conviction of Ted Kaczynski, Timothy McVeigh, and Terry Nichols. Reno was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2000. She had an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination for Florida governor in 2002.

Janet Reno died on November 7, 2016, at the age of 78. Her reported cause of death was complications from Parkinson’s disease. She was first diagnosed with the disease in 1995. Reno had no children and she was never married. She’s survived by her sister and several nieces and nephews.
