Jimmy Breslin was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist and author. Dubbed a “street reporter”, he’s written columns for the likes of the New York Daily News, New York Post, and Newsday. He’s authored several fiction and nonfiction books. Breslin was born James Earl Breslin on October 17, 1928, in Queens, New York. His father James, was a musician, and his mother, Frances, a teacher. He had a sister named Deirdre. Breslin was raised by his mother in the Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens. He attended John Adams High School followed by Long Island University. He was an avid football player back in high school.

CAREER
Breslin began his career as a journalist with the Long Island Press. He served as a columnist for The New York Herald Tribune, The New York Post, The New York Daily News, and Newsday. He ran unsuccessfully for president of the New York City Council in 1969. Breslin covered the “Son of Sam (David Berkowitz) killings” in 1977. He hosted his own late-night program, Jimmy Breslin’s People, on ABC in 1986.

Breslin’s first novel, The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight, was published in 1969 by Viking Press. The book was adopted into a 1971 film starring Jerry Orbach and Robert De Niro. Breslin’s other publications include I Want to Thank My Brain for Remembering Me (1996), I Don’t Want To Go to Jail (2001), and The Good Rat (2008). His film credits include If Ever I See You Again (1978) with Joe Brooks, and Summer of Sam (1999) with John Leguizamo.

Breslin was awarded the George Polk Award in 1985. He was honored with the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 1986.
